POLICY WIRE — Singapore — The UK electronic band Massive Attack has been banned from returning to Singapore after members shouted “free Palestine” during a concert on Wednesday. Singapore authorities cited the city-state’s policy of political neutrality as the reason for the ban.
The incident occurred during the band’s performance at the Esplanade Theatres. Video footage circulating online shows band members raising the chant, which has been a rallying cry in support of Palestinian rights amid ongoing conflict in the region.
In a statement, the Singapore authorities emphasized the importance of maintaining political neutrality in public events. “Artists performing in Singapore are expected to respect our regulations regarding political neutrality,” the statement read. “The actions of the band members during the concert were in breach of these regulations.”
Massive Attack, known for their politically charged music — and activism, have yet to comment on the ban. The band’s management didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.
This is not the first time Singapore has taken action against public displays of political sentiment. The city-state has a history of enforcing strict regulations to maintain social harmony — and political stability.
