U.K. Anti-Migrant Protesters Draw Criticism for ‘Thuggish’ Tactics in Dover and Portsmouth

POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — Hundreds of masked individuals disrupted traffic at the Port of Dover, one of the world’s busiest ferry ports, over the weekend, bringing movement to a halt.

The demonstration, part of a growing trend of aggressive protests across the U.K., saw participants wearing balaclavas, all-black attire, and waving English and British flags as they chanted slogans like “stop the boats” and “Christ is king.” The protest caused a four-mile traffic jam, affecting both passengers and freight shipments.

Kent Police labeled the event as a “spontaneous protest” but did not make any arrests. However, local Labour MP Mike Tapp disputed this, suggesting the gathering was well-organized and questioned why police were unprepared. He called for an investigation into intelligence gaps and potential support from other forces if similar events occur again.

A far-right group called Patriot Platform, led by Daniel Thomas—also known as Danny Tommo—claimed responsibility for the demonstration. Thomas, an anti-immigration social media figure and associate of Tommy Robinson, praised the protest on X, stating that “a message was sent” and expressing confidence in future actions. He also claimed legal assistance was available during the event, though Kent Police has not confirmed this.

Dover has remained a focal point in the ongoing debate over small boat crossings. Since 2021, nearly 200,000 migrants have arrived via the English Channel, though numbers have dropped significantly this year. Despite this, the issue remains a central political concern.

The U.K. government, under the Labour Party, criticized the protest, stating that while free speech is protected, the thuggish and intimidating behavior in Dover was unacceptable. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, also condemned the demonstrations, calling them “disgusting” and urging against the use of masks in political protests.

A second protest occurred in Portsmouth, where hundreds gathered after a boat carrying approximately 140 migrants was intercepted off the coast. Authorities used helicopters, aircraft, and lifeboats to assist in the rescue operation. Protesters attempted to block buses transporting migrants, while police maintained lines to prevent interference.

Anti-migrant demonstrations have grown more frequent in recent years, with hotels housing asylum seekers often targeted. Violence and disorder have been reported in cities such as Glasgow and Belfast. Tommy Robinson, a prominent far-right activist, has continued organizing rallies, including a 2025 event where Elon Musk addressed supporters remotely.

Despite efforts by successive governments to curb the flow of undocumented migrants, arrivals remain a contentious issue. In 2025, over 40,000 people crossed the Channel, and around 17,000 have done so in the first nine months of 2026—a 43% decrease compared to the same period last year. However, high-profile activists continue to keep the issue in the public eye, ensuring it remains a source of national tension.
