Typhoon Dolphin Disrupts Flights in Eastern China, Shanghai on Alert

POLICY WIRE — Shanghai, China — Flights serving eastern China faced significant disruptions on Saturday as Typhoon Dolphin approached the coast. Airlines have cancelled some services — and are offering flexible rebooking and refund options for affected passengers.

The majority of the typhoon-related flight disruptions have been reported at airports in Ningbo, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, according to Chinese media. Passengers have also received notifications that flights to — and from Shanghai on Sunday and Monday may be impacted.

Chinese authorities have issued alerts — and advised residents to take necessary precautions. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau has warned that the city is set to enter the danger zone as the typhoon nears.

Airlines including China Eastern, Air China, and Hainan Airlines have announced that passengers scheduled to travel through affected regions can rebook or cancel their flights without additional charges.

A spokesperson for China Eastern Airlines stated, “We’re closely monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates and assistance to our passengers. Safety is our top priority.”

Local authorities in Shanghai have activated emergency response plans and are coordinating with airlines and airports to manage the situation. Residents have been advised to stay indoors — and avoid non-essential travel.

The typhoon is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rainfall to the region, potentially leading to further disruptions and safety concerns.
