Trump’s Tariffs and Lake Renaming Threaten Rogers’ Michigan Senate Bid

POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Republican Mike Rogers faces an uphill battle in Michigan’s Senate race, partly due to President Trump’s recent actions. Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America” and impose tariffs on Canadian goods have created challenges for Rogers.

These decisions are part of Trump’s ongoing trade dispute with Canada, which has seen a 50-percent tariff on Canadian auto parts, vehicles, and steel. Canada responded with “dollar for dollar” tariffs on American goods.

The tariffs and renaming have caused headaches for Republicans aiming to retain control of the House and Senate in the November midterm elections. They must defend Trump’s policies to undecided voters, especially in Michigan.

Michigan is crucial for Republicans hoping to flip an open Senate seat. Democrats nominated Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive supporter of Medicare for All, to replace Sen. Gary Peters. Republicans chose former congressman Mike Rogers, who struggles to balance Trump’s policies with appealing to moderate voters.

El-Sayed criticized the Lake Ontario renaming, highlighting its impact on the Great Lakes region, of which Michigan is a significant part. He also attacked Rogers for retiring to Florida, suggesting he mirrors Trump’s actions.

The National Taxpayers’ Union Foundation revealed that Michigan is the third-most affected state by Trump’s tariffs, costing Americans $23 billion. Michigan households bear the highest per-household tariff burden at $5,619, making El-Sayed’s campaign slogan more resonant.

Rogers has yet to comment on the tariffs, unlike Republican Sen. Susan Collins, who criticized their impact on Maine’s industries. El-Sayed, however, has seized on the issue, accusing Rogers of corruption and cowardice for not addressing the tariffs.

Despite these challenges, polling shows a close race between El-Sayed and Rogers. Rogers aims to attract Democratic voters supporting Jocelyn Benson for governor. El-Sayed faces criticism for campaigning with Hasan Piker, a left-wing Twitch streamer, who made controversial remarks about Jewish support for Israel.

Trump’s actions may overshadow these attacks on El-Sayed, potentially harming Republicans’ chances of preventing a Democratic majority in the Senate.
