Trump Pauses Russia Sanctions for 60-Day Economic Impact Review
President Donald Trump initiates a 60-day review of Russian sanctions and tariffs to evaluate global economic impacts, drawing scrutiny from lawmakers.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — President Donald Trump has implemented a temporary waiver on sanctions and tariffs targeting Russian exports, initiating a two-month window to evaluate the potential economic consequences of these measures.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the 60-day assessment period on Saturday. He noted that the administration intends to carefully analyze how such trade restrictions and sanctions might influence both the U.S. and global economies.
The decision follows a period of heightened energy prices linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. While the pause provides temporary relief for nations like India, it has sparked bipartisan criticism within the United States.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has expressed concern that the move could inadvertently strengthen the position of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite the ongoing review, no final determination regarding the long-term status of these sanctions has been reached.
Rubio addressed the timeline during a briefing held Saturday evening, shortly before departing for a diplomatic tour of Uzbekistan and India. He stated, I think the President wants to take the 60-day period of time to sort of analyze what imposing both sanctions and tariffs will mean to the global economy and even to the U.S. economy.
