Trump Curated Government-Funded Ads to Promote His Legacy, Report Reveals
Trump handpicked images for taxpayer-funded ads promoting his presidency, sparking bipartisan backlash and legal threats.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — President Donald Trump personally selected visuals and footage used in government-funded advertisements that highlight his administration, according to a new report.
The ads, which began airing last week ahead of the midterm elections, have sparked criticism from both political parties over the use of public funds for what some describe as campaign-style messaging.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune praised the message but questioned its funding source, while a former Trump campaign official called the ads “dumb, dumb, dumb beyond belief.” The White House has defended the content as public service announcements, comparing them to past efforts to promote Medicare and vaccination campaigns.

One ad featuring a warning about a “final battle” for the nation closely resembled a 2024 Trump campaign commercial, with only the branding changed to reflect government funding. Other ads emphasized anti-communist rhetoric, criticized media outlets, and included Trump vowing to remove “warmongers” and “globalists” from power.
A White House spokesperson stated the ads are educational and unapologetically patriotic, while communications director Steven Cheung accused the media of spreading false information about the ads. A cease-and-desist letter was sent to Trump’s chief of staff after an unauthorized use of a song by JMSN in one of the ads.
Democrats have condemned the commercials, with Rep. Jamie Raskin calling them “felony criminal theft” and accusing the administration of misusing government resources for political gain. AdImpact estimates the total cost of the ads may exceed $1 million.
