Trump Claims Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire, but Kyiv Reports Continued Attacks
Trump claims Russia and Ukraine agreed to energy ceasefire, but Kyiv reports ongoing attacks. Zelenskyy urges de-escalation.
POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had reached an “energy ceasefire” in the ongoing conflict, but Ukrainian officials reported continued attacks on energy infrastructure following his statement.
Trump’s social media post stated the agreement was immediate, with a call for all parties to abide by it. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that Russian strikes on energy facilities persisted, including in Kyiv and Kharkiv, where a power plant was targeted.
Zelenskyy expressed cautious optimism about the announcement but emphasized that Russia must halt its attacks on energy systems. He also reiterated Ukraine’s willingness to refrain from targeting Russian energy infrastructure if Moscow did the same. Meanwhile, Trump has been pressuring Zelenskyy to stop such strikes, while also suggesting Ukraine needs a new leader.
