POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C., USA — President Donald Trump announced he would press the Justice Department to examine what he described as a criminal act by Democrats, specifically naming Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin.
In a written statement, Trump claimed that threatening letters have been dispatched to many individuals, labeling them innocent, and accused Democratic political leaders of launching an intimidation campaign.
The White House and Senator Slotkin did not respond to requests for comment on the president’s allegations.
Trump urged the DOJ to launch an investigation into the alleged wrongdoing, linking the request to recent Democratic calls for oversight of his cabinet and other officials.
Slotkin defended her earlier remarks about deterring corruption in the Trump administration and characterized the Republican backlash as manufactured outrage.
