POLICY WIRE — City, Country — A new government services website, America.gov, is being developed by former members of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with the goal of supporting Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections.

The site, set to launch by the end of September, will feature an AI-powered chatbot that allows users to complete tasks such as filing taxes and renewing passports. The initiative has drawn attention due to its potential to replace a free tax-filing tool created by the Biden administration, which was canceled by the Trump administration in 2025.

Former Direct File deputy Merici Vinton criticized the decision, noting that the program had gained public trust before being shut down. Meanwhile, the project is being led by Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb and a former DOGE official, who previously oversaw other controversial websites like TrumpRx and Trump Gold Card. The site will use Login.gov for identity verification, managed by the General Services Administration.
