Trump Administration Unveils Seafood Labeling Initiative and Fishing Industry Loan Package
The Trump administration plans to introduce voluntary U.S. Caught Seafood labels and a $5 billion loan program to bolster the domestic fishing industry.
POLICY WIRE — Fort Myers, Florida — The Trump administration is launching a new initiative to promote domestic seafood through voluntary labeling, while simultaneously rolling out a significant financial support package for the nation’s fishing industry.
The Food and Drug Administration has proposed a new U.S. Caught Seafood label. Officials clarified that the use of this designation will remain voluntary for producers rather than becoming a mandatory requirement.
President Trump is scheduled to highlight these seafood-related policies during a campaign stop in Fort Myers on Friday. The event is part of a broader effort to support Senate candidate Ashley Moody and gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds, followed by a stay at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach.
This announcement is part of a strategic push by the White House to introduce economic incentives in states visited during the final campaign stretch leading up to the midterm elections. Government data underscores the scale of the market, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports that approximately 80% of seafood consumed in the U.S. during 2023 was imported.
The economic disparity in the sector remains notable, with U.S. commercial fishermen landing a catch valued at $5.1 billion in 2023, compared to $25 billion in total seafood imports. To address these challenges, U.S. officials confirmed that the administration is preparing $5 billion in loans through the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help the fishing industry invest in new equipment.
