POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Tropical Storm Polo is set to bring heavy rainfall and flash flood dangers to the U.S. after passing through Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The storm was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm on Tuesday, but millions of people from Arizona to Iowa remain at risk for severe flooding. In southern New Mexico, roads have already been flooded, trapping drivers until the water recedes.

Polo made landfall in Baja California Sur as a hurricane before moving northeast into Sonora, Mexico. It is expected to continue its path into the southwestern U.S., approaching El Paso on Wednesday. The NHC predicts the storm will weaken but still bring significant rain, with some areas seeing up to two inches of rain per hour.
