POLICY WIRE — Liberty, Missouri — A devastating incident occurred at William Jewell College as football player MicahJo Barnett passed away following a medical emergency during the team’s season opener.
MicahJo Barnett, a junior majoring in business administration and a running back for the Cardinals, died on Saturday. The college confirmed the tragic news.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the college stated.
The game against Fort Lewis College was postponed after the emergency took place on the William Jewell sideline, as announced by the school on social media.
Shawn Jakubowski, Director of Athletics at Fort Lewis College, expressed condolences, saying, “Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone at William Jewell during this incredibly difficult time.” Counseling support is being offered to both teams.

Barnett, a local from Liberty, had a notable high school career, leading Liberty North High School to a state championship. He started five games for William Jewell in the 2025 season before an injury ended his season.
The college community plans to gather for a vigil at 8 p.m. on Saturday to honor Barnett’s memory.
