POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — A ferry caught fire off the coast of Indonesia, resulting in at least five confirmed deaths and dozens of passengers missing, according to officials.
The incident occurred when the vessel, en route from one island to another, erupted in flames. The Indonesian National Search — and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) is leading the rescue efforts. An image of the burning ferry was released by BASARNAS via AP.
Authorities haven’t disclosed the exact number of people onboard at the time of the incident. Rescue teams are working to locate — and assist survivors while identifying the deceased.
“We’re doing everything we can to rescue those still missing and to understand the cause of this tragedy,” said a BASARNAS spokesperson.
Further details regarding the cause of the fire and the total number of passengers are expected as the investigation continues.
