POLICY WIRE — Axminster, Devon — Tony Bartlett, 39, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years for the murder of his four-week-old son, Atticus. The crime, committed in a fit of anger, has shocked the community of Axminster, Devon.
Bartlett appeared at Exeter Crown Court, where he was handed the severe sentence by Judge William Morris. The judge emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating that Bartlett’s actions were a stark violation of the trust and care expected of a parent.
“The murder of a defenseless infant is one of the most heinous crimes imaginable,” Judge Morris said. “The impact on the family — and the community is profound, and justice demands a significant penalty.”
The court heard that Bartlett, in a moment of rage, inflicted fatal injuries on his son. Emergency services were called to the family home, but Atticus was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of death to be severe head trauma.
Detective Inspector Sarah Collins, who led the investigation, described the case as “heartbreaking.” “This is a tragic loss of a young life, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time,” she said.
Bartlett showed no emotion as the sentence was passed. He will be eligible for parole consideration after serving 18 years.
