Thomas Markle, father of Meghan Markle, arrested in Florida for alleged child sexual abuse material. Read the details of the international investigation.
POLICY WIRE — Lakeland, Florida — A U.S. prosecutor has confirmed that Thomas Markle has been arrested in the United States on allegations of possessing child sexual abuse material.
The 82-year-old father of the Duchess of Sussex was taken into custody at the Maravida Senior Living care facility in Lakeland, near Tampa. He had reportedly returned to the area to recover from a recent medical procedure and was observed in a wheelchair while being led away by FBI agents.
The arrest follows reports made last month by his son, 60-year-old Thomas Markle Jnr., who alerted authorities in the Philippines and the FBI. The son claimed to have discovered a collection of alleged child abuse images while searching his father’s belongings in Cebu City, where an investigation is currently active.
A secondary cache of material was reportedly recovered last week during a Mexican police raid on a storage unit rented by Thomas Markle Snr, located near his former residence in Rosarito, Mexico.
A retired director of photography and lighting for television, Thomas Markle Snr has acknowledged paying for sexual services in the Philippines. However, he has denied any possession of child abuse imagery, dismissing the claims made by his son as “sick lies.”
Meghan Markle expressed that she was deeply distressed by the allegations. She revealed that seven years ago, she received a letter from the Metropolitan Police and Royalty and Specialist Protection regarding disturbing claims about her father, which assured her the matter was being investigated.
The Metropolitan Police have acknowledged they did not share the specific details with other law enforcement agencies, prompting an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. While the Duchess reportedly wished to make a statement immediately after reading the letter, she was advised not to do so.
Regarding her estrangement from her father, Markle stated last month that her decision to maintain distance and prevent him from seeing her children was solely for their protection. She noted that the scale of the discovery is more sickening than she could imagine and expressed hope for justice and the safety of children.
During a press conference in Manila on Thursday, Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla stated the son is considered a person of interest in the case. He noted there are indications of the son’s involvement, though he is not yet classified as a suspect.
Remulla reported that investigators found over 7,000 photographs and one video featuring minors of Asian, Latin, and European descent, some as young as 10 years old. The official described the materials as the most deplorable displays of impunity that I ever seen.
