The Microbiologist’s Guide to Bedding Hygiene: How Often Should You Really Wash Your Sheets?
Discover how often you should wash your sheets and pillows to eliminate allergens, bacteria, and dust mites for a healthier, cleaner sleep environment.
POLICY WIRE — Leicester, United Kingdom — While humans spend roughly one-third of their lives in bed, the hidden biological activity occurring within our linens is often overlooked. Primrose Freestone, a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Microbiology at the University of Leicester, warns that our sleep environments are frequently teeming with microbes, allergens, and irritants that accumulate rapidly.
Every night, the average person sheds hundreds of thousands of skin cells and excretes up to half a pint of fluid. Even for those who shower before bed, these secretions, combined with natural body oils, create a fertile breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
Data from a 2022 YouGov poll highlights a concerning trend, revealing that only 28 per cent of British residents wash their sheets on a weekly basis. Some individuals reported waiting eight weeks or longer between laundry cycles, a habit that allows dust mites to thrive on shed skin flakes.
These microscopic creatures are not inherently dangerous, but their faecal matter acts as a potent allergen that can exacerbate asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis. Furthermore, fungi such as aspergillus fumigatus can colonize pillows, potentially leading to lung infections in individuals with compromised immune systems.
To maintain a hygienic sleep space, experts recommend washing sheets weekly, or every three to four days if you are ill, sweat excessively, or share your bed with pets. Linens should be laundered at 60°C or higher to effectively neutralize bacteria and dust mites, with tumble drying or ironing providing additional sanitization.
Pillow maintenance is equally critical; experts suggest vacuuming mattresses weekly and airing them every few days. To manage dust mites within pillows, placing them in the freezer for at least eight hours is recommended. Mattress protectors are advised, and mattresses should generally be replaced every seven years.
Duvets should be cleaned every three to four months, while pillowcases require washing every two weeks, or more frequently if pets are present. Always consult care labels before cleaning, as some items may require professional services or specific temperature settings to prevent damage.
