POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — The ubiquitous yellow school bus, a staple of American student transport, has a storied past that traces back to the early 20th century. Initially, school buses came in a variety of colors, but the adoption of yellow as the standard hue was driven by safety and visibility concerns.
The transition to yellow buses began in the 1930s, following a joint effort by the National Association of State Directors of Safety Education and the American School Bus Council. Dr. Frank W. Cyr, a Columbia University education professor, played a pivotal role in this change. In 1939, Cyr organized a conference where the idea of standardizing school bus color was proposed and ultimately adopted.
“The color yellow was chosen for its high visibility during daylight hours, which was critical for the safety of children,” said Dr. Cyr during the conference. The decision was influenced by studies showing that yellow is one of the easiest colors for the human eye to see, especially in poor weather conditions.
Before the standardization, school buses were painted in various colors, including red, green, and even black. The lack of uniformity posed significant safety risks, as drivers and pedestrians often failed to recognize these vehicles as school buses. The introduction of the yellow color helped mitigate these dangers, leading to a dramatic decrease in accidents involving school buses.
Over the decades, the yellow school bus has become more than just a mode of transportation; it symbolizes the American educational system. Its distinct color and design have made it easily recognizable, contributing to its iconic status. Today, the yellow school bus continues to be a vital part of student transport, ensuring the safe commute of millions of children across the United States.
