POLICY WIRE — London, United Kingdom — The latest installment of The Celebrity Traitors drew a massive audience, with 9.3 million viewers tuning in to witness the banishment of comedian Joe Lycett from the castle.
Data released by the BBC indicates that the sixth episode of the reality competition reached a peak of 9.6 million viewers, securing a 57 per cent audience share. This follows a record-breaking start for the second series, which debuted earlier this month with an average of 8.9 million viewers, marking the most-watched premiere for a UK season to date.
The episode’s narrative shifted following the departure of Hannah Fry, who was revealed as a traitor during Thursday’s round table. Traitors Maya Jama and James Acaster opted to recruit YouTube personality King Kenny to fill the vacancy, meaning no contestant was murdered during Friday’s broadcast.
Lycett’s exit was largely attributed to his own behavior; his persistent requests to be recruited by the traitors drew significant suspicion from the faithful contestants, ultimately leading to his removal from the game.
During a challenging mission held in heavy rain, the celebrity cast participated in a task requiring them to match statue heads to their respective bodies. The group also participated in a lighthearted vote, naming Michael Sheen as the head of the round table, Romesh Ranganathan as the best poker face, and Jerry Hall as the person with her head in the clouds.
Moments of levity occurred when Little Mix star Leigh-Anne Pinnock instructed comedian Miranda Hart on the choreography for the band’s song Touch. Hart jokingly referred to herself as Big Mix during the session.
Meanwhile, the traitors attempted a covert operation to eliminate either Jerry Hall or Ross Kemp by boring them to death. The group utilized a peacock-shaped perfume bottle, attempting to trick a faithful into yawning to inhale the substance.
The episode concluded on a cliffhanger, with the traitors facing mounting pressure as time appeared to run out on their latest murder attempt. Audiences must wait until next week to see if the plot succeeded, as The Celebrity Traitors returns to BBC One next Thursday at 8pm.
