POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Newly disclosed text messages reveal that a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agent admitted the decision to deploy federal immigration forces outside California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting rally last August was driven by a partisan “agenda.”

The texts, part of recent court filings, show the agent conceding that the Border Patrol’s presence at the event was orchestrated as a political maneuver rather than a routine law enforcement action.

“The deployment was clearly a political stunt, meant to influence public perception ahead of the redistricting discussions,” the agent wrote in one of the messages.

Newsom’s office hasn’t yet commented on the revelations. The redistricting rally, held in August, aimed to garner support for the governor’s proposed changes to electoral maps.

The texts provide insight into the motivations behind the federal agency’s actions, raising questions about the impartiality of law enforcement in politically charged environments.
