POLICY WIRE — Tampa, Florida — A security guard is being hailed as a hero by local authorities after neutralizing an armed assailant during a violent attack at a Citibank campus on Wednesday.
Hilsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister held a press conference Thursday afternoon to provide details on the shooting at the Citibank plaza located in unincorporated Tampa, which ultimately resulted in two fatalities.
According to Sheriff Chronister, the security guard identified as John Fraley, fatally shot the suspect who stormed the Brandon campus. The attacker was reportedly enraged over credit card debt exceeding $2,500.
The suspect, described as a shirtless and irate individual, drove onto the busy Citibank Center property and opened fire, killing one woman and wounding four other individuals.
Fraley engaged the gunman, shooting him to death and stopping the rampage, preventing further casualties at the location.
Sheriff Chronister explicitly praised Fraley’s actions, calling him a hero for his response during the chaotic situation.
