Taiwan Prosecutors Indict Five Over Plot to Attack Comedian Who Mocked Xi Jinping
Taiwanese authorities have indicted five individuals for plotting to run over a comedian who satirized Chinese President Xi Jinping in his performances.
POLICY WIRE — Taipei, Taiwan — Taiwanese prosecutors officially indicted five individuals on Wednesday for orchestrating a plot to strike a comedian with a vehicle. The target of the planned attack is a performer known for his satirical routines regarding the Chinese government and President Xi Jinping.
In a separate legal development, prosecutors indicted two additional men on Tuesday. These charges stem from a May 29 incident at a Taipei comedy venue on Fuxing N Road, where bags filled with a mixture of paint and human feces were thrown at the establishment.
The vandalism occurred following the viral success of stand-up comedian Huang Yi-hao, whose jokes mocking the Chinese leadership drew significant attention. The series of attacks has sparked heightened concern regarding the potential for cross-border repression and intimidation tactics within Taiwan.
