Survivors Arrive at Port After Fatal Ferry Fire in Indonesia

POLICY WIRE — Jakarta, Indonesia — Survivors from a deadly ferry fire that erupted off the coast of Indonesia have reached port, authorities confirmed today. The incident, which occurred early morning, has resulted in at least five fatalities and 41 passengers reported missing.

The ferry, en route from Port A to Port B, caught fire approximately 20 miles from the destination. Eyewitnesses reported hearing explosions followed by thick smoke billowing from the vessel. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene.

“The situation was chaotic. We did our best to evacuate as many people as possible,” said a crew member who survived the incident. Rescue teams worked through the night to pull survivors from the water.
