Sudan Conflict Endangers UNESCO Heritage Site: Meroe Pyramids

POLICY WIRE — Khartoum, Sudan — The escalating conflict in Sudan has placed the ancient Meroe pyramids, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, under severe threat. Over 200 pyramids, dating back to the Kingdom of Kush, are now at risk due to the ongoing war — and neglect.

The Meroe pyramids, located in the Nile Valley, are one of Sudan’s most significant archaeological sites. The Kingdom of Kush, which thrived from around 800 BCE to 350 CE, built these structures as tombs for its kings and queens. The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011.

Local authorities — and international heritage organizations have expressed grave concern over the situation. “The Meroe pyramids are not just a Sudanese treasure but a global heritage site. The ongoing conflict and lack of maintenance pose a serious threat to their preservation,” said a representative from UNESCO.

The Sudanese government has been unable to provide adequate security and maintenance for the site amid the country’s political instability. The conflict, which began in 2023, has led to widespread destruction and displacement, further complicating efforts to protect the pyramids.

International efforts to safeguard the site have been hampered by the volatile security situation. Archaeologists — and heritage experts have called for urgent action to mitigate the risks. “We need immediate international intervention to secure the site and prevent irreversible damage,” stated an archaeologist involved in Sudanese heritage projects.

The Meroe pyramids are not the only cultural heritage sites in Sudan facing threats. Other historical — and archaeological sites across the country are also at risk due to the conflict. The international community is urged to take swift action to preserve these invaluable pieces of human history.
