POLICY WIRE — Nashville, USA — Stella Parton has opened up about the decision to withhold specific details regarding the cancer that led to the death of her sister, the legendary country music icon Dolly Parton.
The singer, famous for the hit song Jolene, passed away on August 25 at the age of 80. Her publicist confirmed at the time that she had succumbed to a brief battle with cancer, though the specific diagnosis was never made public.
During a recent appearance on CBS Mornings, Stella Parton explained her silence to host Gayle King, stating simply, “Well, that was her business.” She noted that while Dolly never issued a formal directive to keep the diagnosis secret, she also never gave her family permission to disclose it.
So out of respect for her … it’s not my business to tell her business, Stella added. She shared that in her final days, Dolly’s only request of her was for prayer.
Reflecting on her sister’s passing, Stella expressed that she misses Dolly’s optimism most of all. She noted that she does not miss seeing her sister in pain, adding, I know she was at peace. She knew where she was going. She wasn’t going anywhere bad. She was definitely prepared.

In an interview with People published just days before her death, Dolly acknowledged she had been navigating difficult health issues. She attributed some of her recent struggles to neglecting her own well-being while caring for her late husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 at age 82.
Dolly’s death was officially announced via an Instagram video by her nephew, Bryan Seaver. Her niece, Lainey Parton, confirmed that the singer was laid to rest during a private funeral held on August 28.
The singer’s team previously stated that Dolly had requested a small, private service for her immediate family. The ceremony took place at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville, where she was buried alongside her husband.
While the funeral was kept intimate, Dolly had previously shared her musical wishes for the service in a 2014 interview with Entertainment Weekly. She expressed a desire for the country-gospel song “If We Never Meet Again” to be performed, noting it was a favorite of her father’s and was also sung at his funeral.
