Starlink Connectivity Restored in Ukraine Following Controversial SpaceX Throttling
SpaceX restores Starlink access in Ukraine after Elon Musk admitted to throttling the service, citing policy violations during the ongoing Russian conflict.
POLICY WIRE — Kharkiv, Ukraine — A tragic Russian drone strike in the Kharkiv region has reignited intense scrutiny over the availability of Starlink satellite services in the war-torn nation. The October 19 attack claimed the lives of five individuals, including a one-year-old child, while they were in a local park.
Among the victims was 34-year-old makeup artist Yulia Spichak, who had been waiting for her son to finish an English lesson when the strike occurred. Her sister, Alina Spichak, emphasized the necessity of global awareness regarding the ongoing violence, stating that the world must recognize the horrors of the war currently unfolding in Ukraine.
The deadly incident took place just six days after SpaceX implemented restrictions on Ukraine’s access to the Starlink network. The satellite system has served as a critical tool for Ukrainian forces, facilitating both defensive maneuvers and offensive operations throughout the conflict.
Elon Musk, the head of SpaceX, confirmed on the social media platform X that the company had intentionally throttled connectivity. Musk justified the decision by alleging that the Ukrainian military had breached the service’s terms of use by employing the commercial technology to conduct offensive drone strikes.
In his statement on X, Musk asserted that the platform was never intended for use in offensive drone strikes to kill people, characterizing the restriction as the closing of a loophole. By Saturday, Ukrainian officials verified that full access to the Starlink network had been restored across the country.
