POLICY WIRE — Tokyo, Japan — Speculators have taken a net long position on the Japanese yen for the first time since February, according to data released late Friday, reflecting a shift in market sentiment toward the currency.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) reported that non-commercial positions in yen futures totaled 10,796 long contracts during the week ending September 8. This marks a significant reversal from the previous week’s net short position of 92,227 contracts, and is the first net long reading since February 24.

The yen has gained strength this month amid expectations of faster interest rate hikes by the Bank of Japan and potential repatriation of assets by domestic investors. The dollar-yen pair reached 152.89 on September 8, its highest level since February 17. This comes after years of depreciation, which accelerated following the election of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi last October and concerns over the central bank’s delayed monetary tightening.
