South Korea and Turkey Forge Strategic Alliance in Nuclear and Defense sectors
Presidents Lee Jae Myung and Tayyip Erdoğan sign major deals to expand nuclear energy, defense, and infrastructure cooperation during a Seoul summit.
POLICY WIRE — Seoul, South Korea — South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reached an agreement on Tuesday to significantly broaden their partnership across the nuclear and defense sectors.
During a bilateral summit held in the capital, the two leaders discussed expanding joint efforts on one of Turkey’s most massive power generation initiatives.
Beyond energy and military cooperation, the nations committed to closer collaboration in various vital fields, including biotechnology, infrastructure, and the management of critical minerals.
President Erdoğan noted during a joint press conference that the newly signed documents build upon a previous memorandum of understanding to push the bilateral relationship even further.
Turkey currently has ambitious plans to construct four nuclear reactors in the northern province of Sinop, along with another four units located in the Thrace region.
South Korea is actively positioned as a major competitor to secure contracts for these future energy projects as the Akkuyu nuclear power plant nears completion.
The summit also featured meetings between President Erdoğan and South Korean business leaders to discuss economic ties between the two nations.
