Seneca Nation Demands Reversal of Trump’s Controversial ‘Lake America’ Renaming

POLICY WIRE — Washington, USA — President Donald Trump has sparked controversy by renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ through an executive order, escalating tensions in his trade dispute with Canada.

The Seneca Nation, based in upstate New York, has vehemently opposed this decision. Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca has called for the order to be revoked, emphasizing the importance of preserving the original name as a tribute to the Indigenous communities that have historically inhabited the region.

Seneca criticized Trump’s action as a blatant disregard for Indigenous culture and a violation of the 1794 Treaty of Canandaigua, which was signed by President George Washington and the Haudenosaunee confederacy. The treaty promises perpetual peace and friendship.

The name ‘Lake Ontario’ originates from the Huron Indigenous people’s term ‘oniatarí:io,’ meaning ‘lake of shining waters.’ In the Seneca language, it is known as’sga:nyodai:yoh,’ translating to ‘beautiful lake.’ The Canadian province of Ontario also derives its name from this lake.

Trump’s order, signed this week, directs the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming service within 30 days. This move comes amid new tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Canadian goods, following failed trade negotiations. Canada has responded with retaliatory tariffs and condemned the lake’s renaming.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected the name change, highlighting the lake’s deep Indigenous roots, which predate both the Canadian Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Trump’s order does not affect Canada’s recognition of the lake’s original name.
