POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Scientists have used lasers to examine the materials in a painting that may have been created by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, revealing both historical and modern elements within the artwork.
The painting, which bears the signature L daVinci, is believed to depict the Roman Emperor Domitian and aligns with the materials used during the Renaissance period, according to researchers from Uppsala University.

Originally auctioned at Christie’s in London in 1928 and 1929, the piece was initially attributed to Titian. A later discovery of the signature led to renewed interest in its potential origin. Researchers employed Raman Spectroscopy to analyze the pigments, finding that most matched those used during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, but one pigment—Prussian blue—was not available until the 18th century, suggesting possible later restoration.
