POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Russian forces executed a massive overnight barrage of missiles and drones across Ukraine on Tuesday, a surge in violence that has stalled hopes for diplomatic progress in the conflict now entering its fifth year.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the aerial assault involved 289 attack drones, alongside 17 ballistic missiles and 59 cruise missiles launched during the night hours.
National air raid sirens remained active throughout the country as officials warn that the threat of further Russian missile and drone strikes remains high.
The strikes focused heavily on critical energy infrastructure, hitting power plants and substations stretching from the Black Sea port of Odesa to other regions.
Ukrainian authorities confirmed Wednesday that the wave of attacks resulted in seven deaths, including one child, and caused significant damage to the nation’s power grid.
In the Kherson region specifically, Russian strikes wounded seven people over a 24-hour period as fighting intensified.
Amidst the escalating violence, Zelenskyy called on the United States to provide additional support for air defense systems as potential peace negotiations appear on the horizon.
