Russia and Ukraine Agree to Oleshky Ceasefire Following Melania Trump Diplomacy
Russia and Ukraine agree to a localized ceasefire in Oleshky brokered by Melania Trump. Peace talks are scheduled for next month in Abu Dhabi.
POLICY WIRE — Kyiv, Ukraine — Ukraine and Russia have reached a formal agreement to implement a ceasefire in the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky. The breakthrough, announced on Friday, October 23, was facilitated by the diplomatic intervention of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump.
The White House confirmed that the First Lady successfully secured the localized truce in the city, which has been under Russian control since February 2022. The agreement aims to address a worsening food crisis reported by residents in the southern Kherson region.
Under the terms of the deal, non-military teams from both nations will be permitted to enter the town. These teams are tasked with visiting residents in their homes and coordinating transportation for civilians who wish to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine.
Ukrainian military command stated that the ceasefire is scheduled to take effect on Tuesday. This development coincides with broader diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that new peace negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, and the United States are slated for next month in Abu Dhabi. The decision to resume these U.S.-mediated discussions follows a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.
