POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Recent scientific findings indicate that certain tree species are contributing to poorer urban air quality as city temperatures rise due to climate change. Researchers have discovered that these trees emit increased levels of a potentially toxic rubber compound known as isoprene.
The study, conducted by a team of environmental scientists, focused on the relationship between urban heat and tree emissions. “As temperatures increase, the emission rates of isoprene from these trees also rise,” said Dr. Jane Mitchell, lead researcher at the University of London’s Environmental Studies Department. “This compound can react with other pollutants in the atmosphere to form ground-level ozone, which is harmful to both human health and the environment.”
Ground-level ozone is a key component of smog and can cause respiratory problems, aggravate existing lung diseases, and harm sensitive vegetation. The research team emphasized the need for urban planners to consider these findings when selecting tree species for city landscaping.
“Cities need to be cautious about the types of trees they plant,” Mitchell added. “While trees are generally beneficial for urban environments, certain species may have unintended negative consequences on air quality under warmer conditions.”
The study also highlighted the importance of continued research into the complex interactions between climate change, urban environments, and air quality. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Mitchell said. “We need to understand these dynamics better to make informed decisions that protect public health and the environment.”
