Proponents of Colorado Graduated Income Tax Measure Claim Victory as Results Trickle In
Supporters of Colorado's Amendment 87 declare victory as the graduated income tax measure holds a narrow lead with millions of votes counted.
POLICY WIRE — Denver, USA — The organization driving Amendment 87 announced on Thursday afternoon that the ballot measure has secured enough support to pass. This declaration of a presumed win came during a news conference held as the state processed approximately 90% of the total statewide vote.
As of 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, unofficial data from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office indicated the measure sat at roughly 51% of the vote. With more than 2.4 million ballots accounted for, the campaign is currently maintaining a thin lead of approximately 50,000 votes.
The proposed legislation would transition Colorado to a graduated income tax system, effectively resulting in higher tax rates for the state’s wealthiest residents. Despite the early victory claims from supporters, the margin remains narrow and projections from earlier Thursday afternoon had not yet shown a definitive winner.
