POLICY WIRE — London, UK — A visually impaired pro-Palestine protester who spent 17 hours perched atop Big Ben has avoided jail time. Daniel Day, from Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, climbed Elizabeth Tower at the Palace of Westminster in London, leading to significant disruption.

Day informed jurors at Southwark Crown Court on Wednesday that he was never directly asked by police to end the stand-off. He described the police negotiation process as “quite funny.” The court previously heard that the protest resulted in road closures, leading to a loss of 25,000 British pounds in bus fares for Transport for London.

The total disruption cost was estimated at 67,000 British pounds. Day’s actions on March 8 last year caused considerable inconvenience — and financial loss.
