Prime Minister Mark Carney addresses the deadly Alberta military base fire that killed four service members, as investigators probe the tragic incident.
POLICY WIRE — Edmonton, Canada — Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Monday that the exact origin of a weekend fire that claimed the lives of at least four military members and left dozens of others injured in Alberta remains undetermined.
Carney noted that the national investigation service of the Canadian military has taken charge of the inquiry into the event. Fifty investigators are currently deployed at the scene, receiving assistance from the RCMP.
The Canadian military reported on Sunday that there are no signs suggesting the disaster stemmed from terrorism. Prime Minister Carney characterized the event as one of the most severe peacetime tragedies to strike Canada’s military on domestic ground.
The violent, fast-moving grass fire tore through Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, one of the country’s busiest military training facilities in Alberta, during military training activities. The defense minister confirmed that four service members lost their lives and numerous others required hospitalization following the wildfire.
