Prabowo’s Balancing Act: Indonesia’s Leader Faces Fiscal and Political Hurdles in Third Year
As President Prabowo Subianto enters his third year, Indonesia faces economic pressure, ambitious welfare spending, and shifting political alliances.
POLICY WIRE — Depok, Indonesia — President Prabowo Subianto marked his two-year anniversary in office this Tuesday, October 20, as his administration highlights progress in energy independence and food security. However, the former military general now faces the difficult task of maintaining fiscal stability while delivering on expansive social welfare promises.
A central pillar of the administration’s agenda is the flagship free nutritious meals program, which has expanded to serve over 57 million people, including toddlers and schoolchildren. With at least US$15 billion allocated to this initiative in the 2027 budget, critics are questioning the long-term sustainability of such high-cost government spending.
The government is also exploring the elimination of tuition fees at state universities, a move estimated to cost 93 trillion rupiah, or roughly US$5 billion annually. While students like Isyana Balqis and Amanda Putri Dimas argue that education should be a higher budgetary priority to support the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, the proposal has sparked debate over how to finance the massive expenditure.
Economic resilience remains a point of discussion, with the economy growing 5.45 per cent in the first half of 2026. Despite this, Finance Minister Suahasil Nazara faces pressure to keep the budget deficit below the 3 per cent of GDP ceiling, as some lawmakers suggest relaxing these fiscal rules to accommodate further spending.
Political tensions are also rising as parties begin to position themselves for the 2029 general election. Observers note that the president’s recent seventh cabinet reshuffle may be an attempt to consolidate control over his coalition, especially as public approval ratings fluctuate and questions persist regarding Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s credentials.
Beyond the political and economic landscape, the administration is battling a severe environmental crisis involving forest and land fires. With over 60,000 firefighters deployed, President Prabowo has labeled the situation a top priority, pledging to overhaul prevention strategies and enforce stricter regulations against slash-and-burn practices.
