Pope Leo XIV Makes Public Return Following Successful Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo XIV greets crowds at St. Peter's Square after lung cancer surgery. The pontiff pledges a gradual return to his duties as leader of the Church.
POLICY WIRE — Vatican City, Vatican — Pope Leo XIV made his first public appearance on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2026, greeting thousands of faithful in St. Peter’s Square just five days after undergoing surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his right lung.
The 71-year-old pontiff appeared at the window of the Apostolic Palace, speaking in a clear, firm voice to the pilgrims gathered below. He expressed gratitude for the global outpouring of prayers and confirmed his intention to slowly resume his responsibilities as the leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
Having overcome this delicate phase, the pope stated he would now gradually return to his activities with the help of God and the prayers of the faithful. During the Angelus prayer, he also encouraged those in attendance to set aside selfish ambitions and serve God without compromise.
The pope was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Saturday, Oct. 17, arriving at the palace unaided to conduct his weekly midday appointment. His surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, noted that the pontiff is in absolutely satisfactory clinical condition, though he estimated another ten days are required for a full recovery.
Dr. Margaritora revealed that the tumor was discovered incidentally during a routine abdominal X-ray. While the results of further tests to determine if the cancer has spread are still pending, the surgeon noted there are no clinical reasons to cancel the pope’s upcoming trip to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, scheduled for Nov. 6 to Nov. 17.
Despite his recent health challenges, the Chicago-born pope has already begun limited work, including a phone call on Friday to Russian President Vladimir Putin to advocate for a ceasefire in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky. Supporters in the square, including parish priest Christopher Butler and pilgrims from across the globe, expressed relief and optimism regarding his swift return to public life.
