POLICY WIRE — Edinburgh, Scotland — What was supposed to be an 8-hour flight from Edinburgh to Chicago transformed into a grueling 20-hour journey for passengers aboard a United Airlines plane.
Heather Fields, a passenger on the July 27 flight, described the ordeal caused by a weather diversion to Green Bay, Wisconsin. The diversion led to a series of complications, including overflowing bathrooms and dwindling supplies.
Fields reported that the situation worsened when the flight crew exceeded their allowable duty time, preventing the plane from taking off. Passengers were instructed to disembark and wait on the tarmac for a replacement crew.
The wait extended to five hours, during which passengers were left without adequate facilities or information. United Airlines eventually provided pizza, though it was insufficient for all passengers.
A new crew arrived hours later, allowing the flight to finally depart for Chicago around 10:30 p.m. Fields, who resides in Costa Rica, arrived in Denver approximately 20 hours after her original scheduled landing time.
After expressing her dissatisfaction to United Airlines, Fields was initially offered $200 in flight credits, which was later increased to $500. However, she found the compensation inadequate.

United Airlines issued a statement apologizing for the inconvenience and explained that Customs and Border Patrol in Green Bay were unable to clear passengers, leading to the tarmac wait. The airline provided food and beverages and ensured a new crew was secured for the continuation of the flight.
Fields expressed frustration over the lack of choices and unmet basic needs during the delays, particularly noting the struggles of elderly passengers and those with disabilities.
