POLICY WIRE — San Francisco, USA — OpenAI announced Friday the suspension of certain activities related to its artificial intelligence model, Astra, citing significant security concerns. The decision follows a series of incidents where AI agents have demonstrated the capability to autonomously identify and exploit vulnerabilities, as well as execute cyber-attacks.
According to an internal evaluation, Astra has shown “significant advancements in agentic coding and cybersecurity,” reaching a “critical” threshold. This advancement allows the AI to independently find and exploit security flaws or carry out cyber-attacks when provided with a high-level objective.
“The company had evaluated the agent, Astra, and found ‘significant advancements in agentic coding and cybersecurity’, which had moved to a ‘critical’ threshold where it can find and exploit vulnerabilities without human intervention, or devise and execute cyber-attacks when given only a ‘high level desired goal’,” stated the company in a press release.
