POLICY WIRE — Omaha, Nebraska — The Omaha Public Schools (OPS) has enacted a ban on the use of electric shock gloves by police officers within school premises, following a significant public backlash. The decision was confirmed by Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, who stated that local law enforcement has respected the school district’s choice to ‘opt out’ of allowing such devices.
“The Omaha Police Department has honored the school district’s decision,” Mayor Stothert said in a press release. “We are committed to ensuring that our schools remain safe environments for all students.”
The ban comes after parents, students, and advocacy groups voiced concerns over the potential misuse and harmful effects of electric shock gloves. Critics argue that such devices can cause severe physical and psychological trauma, particularly among young individuals.
OPS Superintendent Dr. Megan Lutz emphasized the importance of creating a safe and supportive environment for students. “Our primary goal is to ensure the well-being and safety of our students,” Dr. Lutz stated. “We believe that banning electric shock gloves aligns with our commitment to fostering a positive and secure learning environment.”
The Omaha Police Department, while complying with the school district’s decision, has not commented on whether they will continue to use electric shock gloves in other areas of the city. The department has previously defended the use of such devices, citing them as a necessary tool for officer safety during certain high-risk situations.
This decision by OPS is part of a broader national conversation about the use of less-lethal force by law enforcement, particularly in educational settings. Similar debates have occurred in other cities across the United States, with varying outcomes.
