POLICY WIRE — Albuquerque, United States — New Mexico is once again preparing for a significant period of strong winds, with Sunday anticipated to bring the most extensive impacts and a high probability of wind gusts surpassing 60 mph.
These elevated wind conditions are expected to persist throughout the evening, particularly in higher elevation areas, before gradually diminishing overnight. A Pacific cold front, characterized as weak, is forecast to traverse the state on Thursday, initiating a shift in wind direction from the west to northwest.
Impending Weather Conditions and Temperature Shifts
Temperatures across the region are predicted to decrease by approximately 5 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit compared to Wednesday’s readings. Despite this cooling trend, many parts of the state will still experience notably warm conditions.
The most intense wind activity is projected to concentrate over New Mexico’s central highlands, encompassing areas such as Clines Corners, Moriarty, and Mountainair. A wind advisory has already been issued for these specific locations, and there is a possibility it could be extended to include nearby communities like Santa Rosa and portions of the Interstate 40 corridor.

Regional Impacts and Weekend Outlook
By Friday, the primary storm system is expected to move out of the area, leading to a slight reduction in wind intensity. Nevertheless, residents in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and the Rio Grande Valley should still anticipate breezy conditions.
Looking ahead to Saturday, winds are expected to strengthen once more as a new weather system approaches from the West Coast. This will result in breezy to locally windy conditions developing by the afternoon.
Eastern New Mexico is predicted to experience the most significant warming due to downsloping winds. Communities like Clovis, Portales, and Tucumcari could see temperatures approximately 10 degrees above their seasonal averages. Similarly, southeastern New Mexico will also warm considerably on Thursday, with Roswell potentially reaching close to 90 degrees Fahrenheit in the afternoon, even after the passage of the cold front.
Local authorities advise residents to secure loose outdoor items and exercise caution, especially those in affected high-wind areas.
