POLICY WIRE — Kathmandu, Nepal — The United Nations has emphasized the urgent need for financial support for countries like Nepal, which face severe climate impacts despite contributing minimally to global emissions, following a recent series of catastrophic floods.

UN Resident Coordinator Lila Pieters Yahia highlighted the devastating toll of the August 26 floods, which were triggered by a melting glacier and affected over 84,000 people in northern Nepal. The disaster damaged critical infrastructure, including roads, schools, and power grids in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading regions.

Nepal has submitted a request to the UN Loss and Damage Fund, created in 2022 to assist developing nations suffering from climate-related disasters. Despite aid efforts, including the use of cargo drones by the World Food Programme, only $22 million has been secured out of a $49.6 million appeal. Urgent needs include restoring water systems, mobile clinics for expectant mothers, and mental health services for those impacted.
