Myanmar Verifies Over 300,000 Rohingya Refugees for Repatriation

POLICY WIRE — Naypyidaw, Myanmar — Myanmar’s military-backed government has confirmed the verification of over 300,000 Rohingya refugees residing in camps in Bangladesh as former residents of western Rakhine state. The announcement comes as the exodus of Rohingya people enters its ninth year.

The verification process, which has been ongoing, aims to facilitate the repatriation of Rohingya individuals who fled violence and persecution in Myanmar. The government stated that these individuals will be considered for return under specific conditions, though details on these conditions remain limited.

The Rohingya, a Muslim minority group, have faced severe discrimination and violence in Myanmar for decades. The exodus intensified in August 2017 following a military crackdown that the United Nations described as ethnic cleansing.
