Multiple Bomb Threats Force Emergency Flight Diversions and Security Searches Across Europe
A wave of hoax bomb threats has forced eight European flights into emergency landings and security searches, impacting Ryanair and international routes.
POLICY WIRE — London, Europe — A rapid succession of suspected bomb threats has disrupted air travel across the continent, forcing multiple aircraft to perform emergency landings and undergo intensive inspections.
Over the last 24-hour period, eight planes—including three originating from the United Kingdom—have been impacted by anonymous warnings regarding explosives.
The disruptions affected two passenger jets destined for Warsaw, as well as a Ryanair service traveling from London to Spain.
Security authorities also confirmed threats against two flights bound for Rome and a separate aircraft traveling from Israel to Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.
In response to the various alerts, seven passenger planes were thoroughly searched upon reaching their European destinations.
Specifically, two Ryanair flights were subjected to security probes in Rome. One of these aircraft, which departed from Dublin, was escorted by security forces upon arrival.
While the threats caused significant logistical delays and emergency diversions, early reports suggest the claims may have been hoaxes.
