Mother and Daughter Killed in Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack Near British Columbia Home
Authorities in BC search for bears after a mother and daughter are killed in a suspected grizzly attack on a popular trail minutes from Bella Coola.
POLICY WIRE — Bella Coola, British Columbia — A devastating tragedy has struck a local community after a mother and daughter were killed in what suspected grizzly bear attack during a routine hike near their home.
Jennifer Balcarras, 48, an art therapist, and her 20-year-old daughter Selah Reed, who worked as a teaching assistant, vanished last Saturday on the Snooka West Trail. The location is situated just a five-minute drive from their residence.
The search for the pair began after Balcarras failed to attend a scheduled virtual meeting with her family. Her brother, Matt Balcarras, informed the Vancouver Sun that her absence raised the initial alarm.
Search teams eventually discovered the mauled body of the mother on Monday, followed by the discovery of her daughter the following day.
Jeff Tyre, representing the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service, stated that there was physical evidence suggesting a grizzly bear may be responsible for the fatalities.
While officials have not released the specific details regarding their theory, they confirmed they are attempting to locate and capture any bears involved, noting the possibility that multiple animals may be present.
Conservation officials clarified that it remains uncertain if more than one bear was involved. Any animal captured will undergo evaluation, and if found responsible, will be dispatched according to provincial protocols for human-wildlife conflict to ensure public safety.
The family expressed profound shock over the proximity of the attack to their residential area. Matt Balcarras noted that the trail is not remote and emphasized that the women were experienced locals who were comfortable in the environment.
Josh Balcarras, another brother of the victim, described the event as surreal, noting it was intended to be nothing but a casual walk.
The family had recently relocated to the community of Bella Coola, 268 miles from Vancouver, to start a new chapter. A GoFundMe page was established to support the three surviving children, noting that Jennifer was still building her financial future and had not yet saved for such a catastrophe.
Josh described the mother and daughter as being two peas in a pod, noting they shared many interests and that Selah was always by her mother’s side. He added that Selah was just beginning her adulthood makes the loss particularly heartbreaking.
