POLICY WIRE — London, UK —
Horticulturalist Monty Don has officially filmed his final episode of Gardeners’ World, marking the end of an era spanning more than twenty years. Accompanied by his loyal dog Ned, the 71-year-old presenter bid off from Longmeadow, which has served as the show’s base for sixteen years.
Don joined the long-running BBC series in 2003, taking over from Alan Titchmarsh at the request of his predecessor. Throughout his journey, he witnessed the loss of dogs Nigel, Nellie, and Patty, but reflected on the incredible privilege of sharing his life and gardening expertise with a global audience.
“From myself, Ned, and Longmeadow it is the final goodbye,” Don stated during the broadcast. He expressed deep gratitude to the viewers for following his path, wishing them best of luck with their own gardening projects in the future.
While the current series concludes Don’s tenure, he has confirmed he will return for two winter specials scheduled to air between now and Christmas. The BBC has not yet named a successor, though viewers have pointed to regular presenters like Frances Tophill as potential candidates, although Tophill has dismissed expectations of taking over the role.
Prior to his success on the show, Don hosted programs such as Tomorrow’s World and Holiday. A significant contributor to horticulture, he was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2018 for his work in broadcasting and charity, and holds the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour, the highest distinction in the field.
