Montana Tragedy: Man Kills 8 Relatives, Including 4 Children, at Family Dinner

POLICY WIRE — Billings, Montana — A man has been identified as the perpetrator of a horrific shooting that claimed the lives of eight relatives, including four children, during a family dinner in Billings, Montana. The incident occurred on Sunday evening, August 23, 2026.

Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims, revealed that the shooter was 44-year-old Alan Smith. Smith’s parents, who were also killed, had previously asked him to leave their home. However, he returned on Sunday and opened fire.

The victims spanned four generations of the blended family, from a great-grandmother in her 90s to a 7-year-old girl. Jennifer Mercer, a neighbor and family friend, established an online fundraiser to assist with funeral costs and other expenses.

Police arrived at the scene on Sunday evening to find the house engulfed in flames. Investigators later confirmed that there were eight victims, including four children, and that the suspect had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation has been hindered by the structural instability of the house following the fire. Firefighters battled the blaze until around 1 a.m. Monday, as the home, located in a subdivision outside city limits, lacked fire hydrants.

Among the deceased were Ireland’s ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, and their two children, Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7. Also killed were Ghekiere’s two stepchildren with her current husband: Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12.

Charlotte Ghekiere is being hailed as a hero for calling 911 and attempting to save her family. The family was described as very loving and close, with amicable ex-spouses and well-behaved children.

The Smith family originally hailed from the Seattle area. After Ireland and Megan Ghekiere divorced six years ago, she relocated to Montana with their children, where she met her second husband, Adam Ghekiere. Alan Smith had moved in with his parents in Montana and lived with them for years before being asked to leave a couple of weeks ago.

Alan Smith killed his grandmother, his parents, his younger sister, and the four children before setting the house ablaze. He attempted to flee but was confronted by law enforcement.

Brad Ireland expressed that there were numerous red flags and warnings, but no one paid attention. Alan Smith was described as a hermit who spent most of his time in his room on his computer.

Alan Smith had attended Eastern Washington University but struggled to find or maintain employment. A search of criminal records in Montana and Washington revealed no prior arrests or charges against him.

Friends of the victims have established two GoFundMe accounts to support Adam Ghekiere and his ex-wife, Erica Schneider.

Adam Ghekiere, who works at the airport in Billings, learned of the active shooting through a dispatch radio. Upon arriving at the Smith home, he found it ablaze and later discovered that his wife and children had been killed.

The shootings mark the 22nd mass killing this year, with 15 of those stemming from domestic disputes, according to a database maintained by the AP and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University.
