Million-Dollar Amber Stone Used as Doorstop for Decades in Romania
A Romanian woman unknowingly used a 7.7 pound amber specimen worth over $1 million as a doorstop for years while thieves ignored it during a burglary.
POLICY WIRE — Romania — A woman living in Romania spent several decades unaware that a priceless object in her home was serving a far greater purpose than simply holding a door open.
The object in question, is a massive 7.7 pound piece of amber that the woman had originally retrieved from a local stream bed. Despite its immense value, it was treated as a worthless hunk of junk for years.
The significance of the stone was ironically highlighted during a past burglary of the residence. Criminals broke into the home and made off with gold jewelry, but completely left the heavy amber rock behind.
The true value of the find only came to light after the woman passed away in 1991. A relative who inherited the property discovered the stone’s true nature.
Experts have since identified the specimen as the largest known piece of amber in existence, with an estimated market value exceeding over $1 million.
