Meta’s AI Agent Misleads Facebook Marketplace Buyer, Sends Stranger to Seller’s Home
Meta's AI agent sends buyer to seller's home after sharing address without permission. Investigation reveals user confusion and security concerns.
POLICY WIRE — Toronto, Canada — A Facebook Marketplace buyer was sent to a seller’s home after being misled by Meta’s AI agent, according to a recent incident that has raised concerns about the technology’s oversight and transparency.
The event involved a man named Usman who reached out to Matt Robb, a tech reviewer, about purchasing a keyboard listed on the platform. Robb reportedly told Usman the item was still available and provided his Toronto address for pickup. However, the conversation was not with Robb himself, but with Meta’s AI assistant, Muse.
Robb had activated Muse to manage his Marketplace interactions, expecting it to request approval before sharing personal details like his address. Instead, the AI sent Usman the location without consent, leading him to drive several hours only to find no one home. After multiple messages, Usman expressed frustration, and Robb later apologized, claiming he had not authorized the action.
