POLICY WIRE — London, UK — The most senior police officer in Britain has issued a stark warning regarding the release of individuals charged with grave firearm and knife offenses.

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated he was “flabbergasted” by the increasing frequency with which suspects accused of these violent crimes are being granted bail.

Rowley claims that the current trend of freeing dangerous defendants is a direct result of a justice system that has become completely overloaded.

According to the Commissioner, the country is now “seeing the consequences” of a systemic failure where courts are unable to remand defendants into custody because jails are too full.

The police chief noted a decline in the number of knife crime defendants being held in custody while awaiting trial.
